between the bars

In the safety of a pitch black mind
An airless cell that blocks the day

Tonight at Le Poisson Rouge the Portland Cello Project performed mostly covers of Elliott Smith as well as Dizzy Gillespie, Pantera and Beyonce. Instrumental covers always take popular songs to a different level because often they change how we have perceived a song. In some cases they also sound far less annoying. I’d always found Elliott Smith’s music to be simple yet very angsty. And I hadn’t known about all the aspects of his life and death until I looked him up on Wikipedia. The cello has such a haunting quality about it, that it brings these songs to life even without the lyrics.
