In love we find out who we want to be.
In war we find out who we are.
Pitch Perfect 2 comes out in a few months, and I can’t wait. In the meantime Anna Kendrick is in another on screen musical – The Last Five Years. I have been to a lot of musicals in the last three years and I think the best ones use some dialogue to connect the scenes and the songs. Especially film musicals. The songs in this movie were great – a little bit sappy, a little bit witty, a little bit funny and a little bit poppy. But I was a little disappointed by the fact that it was all song. They were working with a film medium and they could have done more in the way they adapted the musical for the big screen.
The story looks back on the five year relationship of Cathy and Jamie, and as it moves through time and from song to song it feels like you only get half of the story at best, with each song highlighting an event in their lives. They meet, they have sex, he becomes a famous writer, she struggles with her acting career, he tries to cheer her up, she tries to support him, they get married, he starts to notice other women, she starts to resent him for his dream coming true, he cheats and they separate. The end.
The interesting thing about the musical is how the story starts at the end of the relationship for her and it starts at the beginning for him. So through their songs they are telling the story from opposite ends before they meet in the middle when they get married. That made the story a little more interesting then “they met, they have sex…”
